The challenge.
To establish J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World for the digital age; reigniting Harry Potter and evolving Fantastic Beasts into evergreen global franchises, and set a new standard for the direct-to-consumer, fan relationship on a global scale.

Welcome to the Wizarding World.
Working with Wizarding World Digital – a new company formed from the team behind Pottermore, along with Warner Bros, the Wizarding World app connects every part of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World – from the films, games, theme parks and stage play, to the books that inspired them all.
A universal ID – the Wizarding Passport – was created, allowing fans to take their House traits, Patronus and Wand wherever they go, making the experience even more magical and uncovering extra special surprises hidden in the Muggle world.

The official Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts companion, the app enables fans to delve even deeper into the stories and characters they love; unlocking spellbinding new content, exclusive experiences and magical interactive features whilst sharing their own unique expression of fandom with friends online.

With multiple content types and regular weekly drops – the Wizarding Weekly – a product architecture needed to be designed that allowed for limitless delivery. The cadence and timing of content was carefully orchestrated to maximise fan engagement.
Magical modules.
A modular system of card templates was developed enabling content to be automatically published across the app in varying contexts and sizes.
The interactive model was designed with multiple layers, allowing the canvas to change seasonally or for special announcements, with functional UI sitting unobtrusively on top.

Enchanting interactions.
With so much of the Wizarding World built around magic, interaction design had to be a big part of the app. Sketches and ideas for spellbinding interactions were rapidly brought to life in prototypes and tested with fans across the world, providing immediate feedback.

Working in parallel with the design teams allowed high fidelity wireframes to be constructed from system elements, streamlining the design and production process.

A reimagined Sorting Ceremony.
Fans can discover (or even rediscover) their Hogwarts house in the official Sorting Ceremony — beautifully reimagined with J.K. Rowling’s original questions. Using Augmented Reality, fans see themselves wearing the Sorting Hat for the very first time, and once sorted can announce their house loyalty with shareable assets.
